Totem Acoustics Arro
Estimated used-market median, refreshed monthly
What owners & reviewers say
Strengths
- Imaging that rivals panel speakers
- Build and finish well above the size class
- Refined, non-fatiguing midrange and treble
- Charming, characterful presentation in small rooms; loved for decades by owners
Criticisms
- Light low-end weight; owners report no usable bass below the midrange without help
- Mass-loading the cabinet helps the low end
- Original plinth fixes with sticky pads, not bolts
- Wants quality amplification within 20-80W
- Port chuffing and soft dynamics when pushed loud
Sound character
Music it likes
Jazz
outstanding; the class strength
Acoustic
outstanding alongside jazz in owner reports
Vocals
excellent; female vocals a documented strength
Classical
chamber-scale excellent; big orchestral at volume is not its game
Rock
the weak spot; dynamics and SPL run out when loud
Electronic
bass-forward material exposes the light low end
Metal inferred
inferred from the loudness and bass limits, not mentioned in sources
Hip-hop inferred
inferred: bass-led material needs the sub the Arro doesn't have
Setup
Watch out for
- Woofer buzz: test sustained 40-60Hz content before buying used; one owner buzzed a driver on a 2x300W amp ↗
- Placement: port tunes near 52Hz and collides with room modes; keep them clear of walls (owner reports call them less fussy than the lab suggests) ↗
- Impedance: 4 ohm nominal but Totem does not publish the minimum; check that your amplifier is happy at 4 ohm ↗
Matched equipment
Known fixes
- Tippy cabinet: use the stabiliser plinth or Claws on carpet; keep vacuum cleaners away ↗
Before you buy used
Lineage
- In the range
- slim floorstander that has stayed in Totem's line for decades with detail changes; gloss finishes came at a premium
- Feet evolution
- early spiked plinths fixed with sticky pads gave way to Totem's three-point aluminium Claws
Room fit
- Room size
- small to medium rooms; near-field listening does not suit them
In their own words
“The Arros disappear better than any speaker I've had in my room”
“very seductive with their imaging and detail. They just don't produce any usable bass and struggle at higher volume”
“Klinkt klein en schuchter, maar dat geeft het net een leuke karakteristiek”
“for me the Arro is a more natural sounding speaker, more balanced, but not at all for near-field listening”
Upgrade path
Often mentioned upgrade
Totem Acoustics Hawk → €1089 median
the direct successor in the slim line and the first rung up (median €1,089 used) ↗
Further up the ladder (5)
- Totem Forest → the big jump up: 30Hz from a still-slim cabinet; used pairs traded around $1,350 in owner-listed deals
- Totem Mani 2 Signature → €2450 median · the family's deep-bass endgame two rungs up (median €2,450 used); wants a serious amplifier
- Totem Wind → €4600 median · the top of the line: 20Hz extension and added transparency over the Forest (median €4,600 used)
- Totem Sky Tower the current-era alternative: the importer's official next step at roughly 25% more, broader and easier than the Arro
- Left the brand for Canton Vento 826.2, Monitor Audio Silver 6 or Rega RS3, when owners chased loud dynamics over the Totem sound
